Exploring Animal Behavior (for families with children of all ages)

Step outdoors to take on the role of wildlife biologists, recording the behaviors of our bears, wolves, and lemurs in Explore the Wild. Use iPods, binoculars, thermometers, annemometers, digital cameras and your senses to learn about and record animal behaviors. Afterwards, use your data, photographs and observations to build a family webpage in iWeb that will allow you to share your findings and remember your experience throughout the year.

Dates and times offered:

Sunday, September 14 from 12-2:30 p.m.
Saturday, September 27 from 9-11:30 a.m.
Saturday, October 11 from 9-11:30 a.m.
*each session is limited to six families

 

Exploring Wetlands (best for families with children 8+)

Spend the day as limnologists studying the wetland ecosystem. Get close to the water where you'll use HACH kits and dip nets to collect water-quality data and identify organisms that live in the water. Your findings will be incorporated into an on-going study about the health of the Museum's wetland.

Saturday, September 20 from 9-11:30 a.m.
Saturday, October 4 from 9-11:30 a.m.
Sunday, October 19 from 12-2:30 p.m.

Family Science Nights

ChemMystery Spooktacular

Enter the Museum after dark for a chemistry spooktacular featuring flaming and foaming Jack-o-lanterns, spider webs that form before your eyes, a magic cauldron full of bubbling brew, and more - presented by Dr. Ken Lyle and Duke University students.
