The Museum of Life and Science will begin accepting applications for the 2012 Summer Youth Volunteer Program on February 1.  This is a fun way to earn volunteers hours while supporting science education in the Triangle!

Duties

Volunteers work with our Summer Camps, supporting the informal science education led by paid staff.  You will prepare the classroom for the day, help the Educator and Assistant with classroom management and work directly with the kids on a wide variety of experiment, projects and activities.  You will help provide a fun and safe environment while helping campers explore science!

Requirements

  • All volunteers must be at least 12 years old by June 11, 2012.  Applications will be reviewed for experience working with young children, positions of responsibility, indication of ability to work as part of a team and interest in science.
  • Volunteers attending schools on a traditional calendar must be able to work two weeks of camp.  The weeks do not need to be consecutive.
  • Volunteers attending schools on a year-round calendar must be able to work one week of camp.

Camp Info

Camps run June 11-August 24 at the Museum in Durham and July 2-27 in Chapel Hill.  Volunteers get to choose their location as part of the application.  Volunteers must work 8:30am-3:30pm, although they may arrive as early as 8am and stay as late as 5:30pm.

Application

In order to be considered, applicants must complete the online application (available February 1) and submit two teacher/mentor recommendations no later than 5pm on February 29, 2012.  Application materials received after the deadline will not be considered.

Teacher/mentor recommendations can be from any adult who can speak to the applicant’s maturity, reliability, ability to work in teams and communication skills and who is not related to the applicant.
