A variety of topics are offered throughout the year including Dinosaur Detectives, Astronaut Academy, A Bear’s Backyard, Down on the Farm and more. Your child will enjoy a fascinating summer camp experience full of fun and excitement, and you’ll feel good knowing that the camps created by our team of experienced educators are designed for your child’s development. The Science of Wine
February 11
Time: 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Join us for an enchanting evening learning about enology, or the science of wine. Stimulate both your brain and your taste buds with wine sampling and education from Wine Authorities retail store and several local NC wineries: Benjamin Vineyards & Winery, Chatham Hill Winery, Grove Winery & Vineyard, Iron Gate Winery, and Rock of Ages Winery & Vineyard. Try your hand at our wine experiments and activities, speak with local wine experts and explore the museum after hours. Guests will also enjoy live music from D-Town Brass as well five wine samples and light hors d’ oeuvres. Taste something you like? Glasses, bottles of wine and additional samples will be available for purchase during the night.

Design It
February 13
Build something that does something! Join us for a hands-on, minds-on day of tinkering, creating, building and inventing. Activities will include spin art, a take-apart station, Contraptions workshops, and a KEVA building challenge. This all-day festival is for anyone with a curious mind!

Durham Appreciation Day at the Museum of Life and Science

Come and get to know your Museum – one of the great things happening in Durham.
Cost: FREE admission for Durham County residents, ID required; $2 per person donation suggested.
Contraptions (new permanent exhibit)
Opening March 6
Get creative, and build something that does something! This new exhibit challenges you to use common materials -- such as pulleys, ropes, pipes, balls and clamps -- to build a contraption that includes multiple components triggered by a chain reaction of events. For instance, moving a lever to push a ball off a table offers direct experience with principles like gravity or friction in a way that brings alive the process of scientific exploration and experimentation with variables. This exhibit is designed for adults and children age 7 and older, for periods of 20 minutes or longer.
Robot Rumble
Saturday, March 20
Time: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Are you ready to Rumble? It’s the battle of the bots! Join in on the competition and watch Carolina Combat battle it out in robot hockey. See Insight Robotics new autonomous Lotus race car, and learn about its thrilling venture with Team Stellar to create a robot to land on the moon. Check out SuperDroid Robots to see the latest tactical surveillance robots for SWAT, military and law enforcement. Plus, see the InTouch Health RP-7(r) doctor robot from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and discover how robots are changing how physicians interact with patients. Take part in a variety of hands-on activities, and so much more!

Nano Days
Saturday, March 27
Time: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Join Museum staff and area scientists as we celebrate NanoDays 2010: a day of hands-on programs and demonstrations about nanoscale science, engineering and technology. We will feature various science and technology related activities designed to excite, engage and educate people of all ages about the science of the very small.
Cost: Activities are free with Museum admission
Two Sessions: March 29 through April 2; April 5 through April 9
Your child will have an incredible time at our spring break camp. Topics include Beneath Your Feet for PreK-K; Weather Explorers for Grades 1-2; Experiments in Mythology for Grades 3-5.
Cost per week: $250 Museum members, $275 non-members
Hours: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.; extended hours are available between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. for an additional fee of $45 per week

Molecular Magic
Tuesday, April 20
Time: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Is it magic, or is it science? Join Dr. Ken Lyle and Chemistry students from Duke University as we shrink objects, make water disappear and illuminate the room with chemicals. These demonstrations are sure to amaze, but in this show, you can also ask questions and learn the science behind the tricks! Sometimes the explanation is more intriguing than the mystery!

Bear Awareness Week
May 16 – 22
Join us as we celebrate Bear Awareness Week. Meet our keepers to learn about these fascinating animals and the issues they face, daily at 2 p.m. at the Bear Exhibit in Explore the Wild. Don’t miss the movie screening of “Bear Facts” on Sunday, May 16 at 3 p.m.
Butterfly Bash
May 22
Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Take flight with us as we learn more about and celebrate the residents of Magic Wings Butterfly House. Enjoy a day of hands-on activities, meet entomology and horticulture experts and encounter invertebrates.

Black Light Insect Hunt
June 5
Time: 8:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Buzz around with thousands of insects at night in the wetlands. Museum staff will lure the creatures of the night to a white cloth with irresistible strong lights that are set up on the boardwalk. See a variety of insects such as moths, beetles, and more. Entomologists will be on hand to help guests identify the bugs. This event is for ages three and older.
Cost: Adults 12 and over $5; under 12 $2.50

Bubble Blitz
June 12
Time: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Join us for a day of good clean fun with a day bursting of demos, experiments and hands-on activities all about bubbles!
