Robot Rumble: Sponsored by IBM.
Ever battled a Bot? Join the leagues of robot enthusiasts who battle their bots for fun and excitement. Watch local and national competitors during our all-day Robotics Fair. Check out a fully robotic, full-size Lotus from Insight Racing, a finalist in the Urban DARPA challenge; enjoy other robotics demonstrations and competitions; robot building workshops and activities. FREE with admission.

10:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm in Gift Shop Crystal Kit – Watch them grow! Three different crystals in one Smithsonian kit. Antworks – Unique gel habitat for live ants. Get tunnelvision with these amazing insects. Gross Out Kits – Its “snot” a boring kit. Learn about your body
Science out of the Box
10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-3:00 p.m. in Scientifica
It’s so much fun you might forget you’re learning! Museum educators are your guides to kits including Amazing Air, Eco Explorers, Rocks and Minerals and From Seed to Plant. Appropriate for children ages 5-up, with options for early learners available.
Learning Product Demonstrations 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in main building: Stomp Rockets – Become the propulsion system for one of these awesome rockets. Dino Dig – Be a paleontologist uncovering the secrets of prehistoric worlds. Toyops 3 Way Wood Kits – See how modern electrics power classic wood kits.

February 9
Birdapalooza!
Meet some of our most majestic fine-feathered friends, take a birding walk, learn more, build a bird house!
10:30 – 11:30 a.m. “Feathered Frolic" with Birdman Dave
Experience live birds flying overhead and get a chance to touch a live bird. Belle, the green-winged macaw, Christopher Columbus, the barred owl, and Sky, the parakeet are the stars of this show about bird observation and their needs or food, water, air and shelter.
11:30 – 12:30 p.m.* Bird House Building Workshop

12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Learning Program
Audubon North Carolina educator Kate Finlayson presents a program of stories, puppetry and props all about our feathered friends. Appropriate for ages 4-7.
12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Bird Walk with Museum Naturalist
Spend a relaxing hour with other bird enthusiasts to watch and identify birds in our ten acres of new outdoor exhibits. We’ve seen blue and green heron and kingfishers – what will you see today?
1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Predators from the Sky
The Carolina Raptor Center presents live birds of prey showcasing their kinship with native wildlife and humans. Learn what makes raptors unique in the avian world and explore what actions can be taken to make a difference for wildlife and our environment.

Play to Learn Exhibit Opening
Research shows that play really is a child's main job and the means by which young children learn. A new permanent exhibit, Play to Learn, features age-appropriate activity stations with two distinct spaces, one for infants and toddlers and the other for children ages 3–6. Get your play group together and come check it out!

Second Saturday Science
Come to the Museum of Life and Science and see what’s happening in The Lab! Explore the science behind health and wellness with facilitated activities. On Saturday, January 12, conduct an experiment to determine your reaction time. Are you faster than a blink of an eye? Would you be able to hit a fastball in a major league baseball game? How does talking on the cell phone affect your reaction time? Find out! The Lab hours are currently 10:30 to 12:30 and 1:30 to 3:30 Tuesday through Saturday, located on the Museum second floor in the Investigate Health! exhibit. FREE with Museum admission.

Santa Train Rides (Santa Train Tickets have sold out.)

An annual holiday tradition for the whole family – the 29th Annual Santa Train is a special nighttime Ellerbee Creek train ride to the Museum’s North Pole to meet Santa and enjoy a fun holiday evening! For ten nights the Museum grounds are transformed into a holiday wonderland with the beloved Museum train decked out in twinkling lights. Santa Train winds its way up to the Museum's North Pole, along the wooded trails, where Santa and his elves greet good boys and girls with holiday goodies and cheer! And watch out for Rudolph – he may be hiding in the trees!
