Bats: The True Story


Learn about bats from around the world- up close and personal!

 

Rob Mies, TV personality and Director for the Organization for Bat Conservation speaks about the benefits of bats, why we need to conserve them, and what you can do to help these unique mammals.

 

Meet a local bat from North America and hear its high-pitched sound with a bat detector! You will also meet a Straw-Colored Fruit Bat from Africa, A Golden Bat from the Indian Ocean Island of Rodriquez and the largest bat in the world, the Gigantic Flying Fox from Malaysia which has a nearly 6 foot wingspan!

 

Rob Mies is a conservation biologist, bat expert and author. He has appeared on many television shows including the Today Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Martha Stewart. Rob and his wife Kim, are the authors of over 12 books including the first field guide to the bats of the United States and Canada, the “Stokes Beginners Guide to Bats.

Bat Story Time with special guest Willa Brigham
Join Emmy Award winning Storyteller Willa Brigham for a special bat story time! Willa is an Inspirational Speaker, Storyteller, Author and Performing Artist. Ms. Brigham is the host of the children’s television show, Smart Start Kids. Willa uses her multiple talents and contagious energy to stimulate audiences of all ages to join her on a quest for excitement, adventure and a joyous tour of your creative imagination.

Program is recommended for families with children PreK-age 6.

1:00 p.m.
Program is recommended for families with children 7 and up.

Ticket prices are $10 for members or $17 for non-members (including Museum admission). However, if you call to register by noon on Friday, May 2nd, we’ll take an additional $5 off for members or $3 off the already discounted non-member price! Live Bat Encounter with renowned Conservationist Rob Mies

Program is recommended for families with children PreK-age 6.

10:00-11:00 a.m. Biolab
Members Only- Wonderful Wings
Bats have very unique wings. We’ll compare bats to other animals that fly and examine how bats’ bodies are adapted for flight. Participants can also make and take a bat glider. Free for Museum Members.

12:00-12:45 p.m. Magic Wings Butterfly House Special Events Tent
Story time with Willa Brigham

12:00 -3:00 p.m. Scientifica
Build a Bat House
Providing a safe home for bats to roost is a great way to help with bat conservation. Stop by the “Bat Home Sales Center” in the lobby to purchase your building materials for your new construction. You can take your project home or bring it in to Scientifica, where you’ll learn more about bat habitats with one of our Animal Keepers and a Museum Naturalist and construct a new “home” for your neighborhood bats. Tools and fasteners will be available for use. Kits are $8.00 each.

Bats of North Carolina
Learn more about the diversity of local bats and how bats exhibit intriguing behaviors. Discover some great places to spend an evening watching these creatures in flight, including in your own backyard. Take home information on “Bat-Watching” will be available courtesy of the Museum’s Science Education Resource Center. Younger guests can participate in a bat mask activity. Free with Museum Admission.

2:30-3:00 p.m. Aerospace
Snack Attack

Microbats are found on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. Learn how this group of bats uses their bodies and things in their environment to navigate around and locate food sources. Come”hungry”! See what’s on the “menu” and learn how much bats can actually eat. It’s more than you think! Free with Museum Admission.
