“Bear In Mind” - Sunday May 11 through Saturday May 17, 2008 is Bear Awareness Week

Bear Awareness Week is celebrated at Zoos, Museums, and Nature Centers across the country. It's a week when people can learn more about the bears of the world, our interactions with them, their importance to us, and issues facing them. Join us as the Museum of Life and Science will be celebrating Bear Awareness Week with fun and educational activities about bears!

Take a behind the scenes tour in the Black Bear exhibit with Museum Animal Keepers. Become a Black Bear Buddy and stuff your very own plush black bear to take home (registration required). Enjoy special exhibits, talks from bear-keepers, interactive activities, arts and crafts, storytelling, scavenger hunts, educational demonstrations, games and more.

Dr. Lesley Skalla will talk with visitors of all ages and interests about black bear reproduction. Dr. Skalla received her PhD in reproductive biology from the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. Black bears are known for having a pregnancy that starts with delayed implantation.
