At Your School | Science-in-a-Suitcase

Educational research offers compelling evidence that materials-based science is very effective in engaging children of all ages. Our Science-in-a-Suitcase kits bring the excitement of “hands-on, minds-on” science discovery experience into your classroom.

Although hands-on science activities greatly enhance your students’ critical thinking skills, program management can be a hassle. Materials are costly and gathering sufficient supplies for all of your students is very time-consuming. With Science-in-a-Suitcase, we do all this work for you.

Deeply rooted in our successful, field-tested Museum programs, each kit includes materials and suggestions for conducting a series of activities on a featured science topic. Suggestions for specific grade levels for each topic are given as well including activities that can be readily adapted to fit your classroom needs.

We have more than 200 Kits. They...
  • include an easy-to-use Activity Guide
  • cover more than 30 science subjects
  • are available for Grades Pre-K through 8
  • can be reserved for four-week periods throughout the year or by the week
  • are sufficient for 30 students
  • great for science nights and before/after school programs

Genetics and Heredity
Grades 6-8
A collaboration with North Carolina State University and the National Science Foundation. This kit includes hands-on activities integrating the math and science curriculum. Activities include a survey of human traits, building genetic “bug” models, isolating DNA, exploring cell division, making math measurements, predicting genetic diseases and more. Also includes experiments to study the genetics of plants.

Light and Color
Grades K, 3, 6-8
There is a phenomenal light show going on in front of your eyes. Investigate some of the basic properties of light and color with prisms, bubbles and more.

Light Reflections
Grades 3, 6-8

Magnets
Grades 4, 6-8
Experience the forces of attraction and repulsion as magnets push and pull different materials. Experiment with some of the basic properties of magnetism through a variety of engaging activities.

Magnets and Motors
Grades 4, 6-8
A National Science Resources Center kit. This kit introduces students to the relationship between magnetism and electricity. Using problem-solving techniques, students build a working compass, a motor and more.

Making Tracks
Grades 4, 6-8
Discover the “fingerprints” of many elusive, North Carolina animals and the stories their tracks tell. Discover the information in animal footprints as they are compared to your own. Track other animals of your species by following their scent.

Me and You
